UCSB bows out to ASU 69 - 42

The UCSB Men's basketball team was blown out by Arizona State 69 - 42 in a game in Tempe, AZ. The Gauchos (4 - 4) were led by Orlando Johnson's 16 points, and James Nunnally's and Jon Pastorek's five rebounds.

The Sun Devils (9 - 3) were led by Rihards Kuksiks' 26 points, who shot 8 - 16 from beyond the 3-point field arc. Jamelle McMillan chipped in 16 points, and Ty Abbott added 12 points. Eric Boateng led ASU with 7 rebounds.

The Gauchos travel to Berkeley, CA to battle Furman in the Golden Bear Classic on Monday, December 28 at Haas Pavilion. Game time is 5 pm.

UCSB loses to Montana State 76 - 64

The UCSB Men's basketball team lost to Montana State 76 - 64 at Bozeman, MT. James Nunnally led the Gauchos (4 - 3) with 13 points off the bench, followed by Orlando Johnson with 12 points. Jaime Serna led the Gauchos with 9 rebounds, while Nunnally garnered 6 boards.

Erik Rush led three Bobcats (6 - 4) in double figures with 17 points, followed by Branden Johnson and Danny Piepoli with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Johnson led with 10 rebounds, followed by Rush's 9 boards.

UCSB visits Montana State

The UCSB Men's basketball team will be traveling to Montana State to play the Bobcats in Bozeman, MT on Friday, December 18 at 6 pm PT. The Gauchos (4 - 2) will look to end a two-game losing streak. The Bobcats (5 - 4) are led by Bobby Howard, Erik Rush, Marquis Navarre, who average 14.2, 13.2, and 11.0 points per game, respectively. Montana State has a balanced attack as Will Bynum and Branden Johnson average 9.7 and 9.1 points per game, respectively.

The Gauchos also have trio of explosive scorers in Orlando Johnson, James Powell, and James Nunnally, who average 16.7, 11.8 , 11.2 points per game, respectively. Each has scored 20 or more points in a game so far this season. Johnson also leads the Gauchos with 7.0 rebounds, while Jaime Serna and James Nunnally average 4.3 and 4.0 rebounds, respectively.

Each team has a common opponent in the University of San Francisco Dons. The Bobcats defeated the Dons 70 - 66 in a road contest, while the Gauchos beat the Dons 76 - 65 at home in the Thunderdome.

Look for Justin Joyner to see increased playing time as he recovers from a sprained ankle, and more minutes from true freshman Chris Brew as he adjusts to Div. 1 college basketball.

UCSB signee Kyle Boswell

UCSB men's basketball 2010 signee Kyle Boswell has started his senior season right where he left off last year. The Edison High standout from Huntington Beach, CA is averaging 21.5 points per game, leading his team to a 1 - 1 record. The 6'2" sharpshooter is considered one of the purest shooters on the west coast.

We will continue to follow his progress throughout the season.

UCSB Signee Troy Leaf

UCSB Men's basketball 2010 signee Troy Leaf is having an outstanding senior season for Foothills Christian High in El Cajon, CA. Leaf is averaging 30.3 points a game while leading Foothills Christian to a 3 - 0 record so far. The 6'2" combination guard is also averaging 7.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game.

We will be following his progress throughout the season.

SDSU downs UCSB 69 - 61

The San Diego State Aztecs defeated the UCSB Men's basketball team 69 - 61 at the Thunderdome, handing the Gauchos (4 - 2) their second consecutive home loss. The Aztecs (6 - 2) used a stingy defense to open up a 21 - 9 lead in the first half, a lead they never relinquished despite leading only 28 - 26 at halftime.

James Powell kept the Gauchos in the game, scoring 20 points, including six 3-point shots. Chris Brew had his second straight productive game after his redshirt was pulled, scoring 11 points, while Orlando Johnson chipped in 10 points. Will Brew had five rebounds to lead the Gauchos, and tied for the team lead with three assists with Justin Joyner.

Tyrone Shelley led four Aztecs in double figures with 17 points, followed by Malcolm Thomas with 15, and Kawhi Leonard and DJ Gay with 13 each. Leonard and Shelley also had nine and eight rebounds, respectively.

The Gauchos travel to Bozeman, MT to play a road game against Montana State on December 18.

SCU defeats UCSB 79-68

The Santa Clara University Broncos handed the UCSB Men's basketball team their first loss of the season by a score of 79 - 68 in the Thunderdome. The Broncos (4 - 3) defense shut down the Gauchos (4 - 1) by causing 23 turnovers and limiting the Gauchos to shooting 43.1% from the field. Chris Brew led the Gauchos in scoring with 12 points while Orlando Johnson chipped in 11. Sam Phippen and Johnson led the Gauchos with seven rebounds, and Justin Joyner led the Gauchos with five assists.

Kevin Foster led the Broncos with 18 points, followed by Marc Trasolini's 15 points. Trasolini also led the Broncos with six rebounds. Raymond Cowell scored all of this 13 points in the first half, as SCU built a 42 - 29 first half lead which they never relinquished.

The San Diego State Aztecs visit the Thunderdome Saturday, December 5 at 7 pm for another nonconference game against the Gauchos.
