2010 preview for Troy Leaf

Troy Leaf averaged 28.1 points, 4.9 assists, 5.7 rebounds, 3.0 steals, and 2.0 blocked shots per game as a senior at Foothills Christian High School in El Cajon, CA last year. The 6'2" guard shot 55% from the field, 39% from beyond the 3-point arc, and 86% from the free throw line.

As a result of his stellar senior year, Leaf was selected First Team All-State All Divisions, California Division 5 Player of the Year, First Team All-State Division 5, San Diego County All Divisions Player of the Year, First Team All-CIF, and First Team All-Southern League. Leaf finished his high school career as San Diego County's all-time leading scorer with 3,318 points, ranking him third in California prep history.

The Gauchos are deep in the backcourt, but Leaf possesses the ability to knock down the perimeter jumper and free throws, which will be in demand with the graduation of James Powell, the Gauchos' all-time leader in 3-point field goals and free throw percentage. Leaf's all-around game may allow him to make an immediate impact as a true freshman, precluding the possibility of a redshirt. Either way, look for Leaf to have an outstanding run with the Gauchos over the next several years.

Headed for UC Santa Barbara in the fall, the 6-foot-3 Leaf will take with him the section career scoring record, becoming the first local player to surpass 3,000 points.

Leaf finished with 3,318, third in state history, according to Cal-Hi Sports. He left previous record-holder and current San Diego State player Tyrone Shelley (2,962 with Christian and Crawford in 2004-2007) well in his wake.

Leaf also was credited with 609 assists (seventh in section history), 374 steals (seventh), 284 three-point field goals (third) and 870 rebounds.

“I didn’t realize until the end of last year that I had a chance at the (scoring) record,” said Leaf, 18. “I’m proud of that record. But even better was playing on a team with Kalob (Hatcher) for four years and J’Vonte Brooks. We won four straight section (Division V) titles and no one can ever do better than that.”

UCSB signs two players for 2010

The UCSB Men's basketball program signed two players from southern California to a National Letter of Intent to play basketball for the Gauchos starting in 2010.

Troy Leaf, a 6'2" guard from El Cajon, CA, averaged 26.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 3.3 steals per game for Foothills Christian High School his junior season. He is a two-time East County League Player of the Year and all-CIF San Diego Section selection, and helped his team to their third consecutive Section Division 4 Championship. Troy's ability to shoot and handle the basketball will allow him to play both guard positions for the Gauchos.

Kyle Boswell, a 6'2" shooting guard from Edison High School in Huntington Beach, CA, can bury the outside jumper with consistency, averaging 21.0 points a game during an injury-riddled junior season. After an outstanding sophomore season, he was named to the All-Sunset League First Team and Sophomore All-State First Team by Cal-Hi Sports.

According to high school scouting services, Boswell is one of the best pure shooters on the west coast, who can also create scoring opportunities for his teammates.

The Gaucho backcourt should be very solid for the next few years with Leaf and Boswell now in the fold.

The 6'2" senior from Foothill Christian High in El Cajon, CA has averaged 25.5 points per game over three years. Leaf originally committed to San Diego State after his freshman year, but de-committed last month, citing concerns of over-recruitment of guards by SDSU.
