UCSD vs UCSB Game Preview, by gauchodan

Game 13 (BW Game 2)
UC San Diego at UCSB
Saturday, December 31, 2022, 4:00 pm PST
Santa Barbara, Calif.

Quick Bite
The Gauchos (10-2, 1-0) rode Ajay Mitchell and Josh Pierre-Louis to a key road victory at defending Big West Tournament champion Cal State Fullerton on Thursday. Mitchell has scored at least 20 points in three consecutive games and is nearly impossible to stop in the final five minutes.  JPL's normal motor is overdrive both offensively and defensively.  Combined with his uber-athleticism, he is a joy to watch at both ends of the court...and you're required to forgive the occasional fast-twitch errors.  UCSB has now won six in a row and re-established itself as the clear favorite in the conference.

Big West games finally count for the Tritons (6-7, 1-0), who are in the 3rd year of a 4-year transition to Division I.  UCSD is still locked out of the Big West Tournament until 2024-25.  The Tritons won their first official Big West contest with an overtime victory at Long Beach State.  Bryce Pope is their smaller version of Ajay Mitchell.  Pope consistently makes clutch shots down the stretch for his team.  His basket with 1.4 seconds left in overtime was the game-winner at the Pyramid.

Head Coach
Eric Olen
overall/UC San Diego: 185-89 (.675)
Olen is in his 10th season as head coach of the Tritons.  Olen led the Tritons to three CCAA regular-season titles and four consecutive conference tournament titles in addition to four NCAA Division II tournament appearances.  UCSD was 30-1 in its final season in Division II, a season that was cut short by the response to COVID-19.  UCSD has adjusted well to Division I under Olen's tutelage, going 26-33 (12-19 vs. Big West foes) in 2+ seasons.  Olen played at Spring Hill College in Alabama where he was a part of 3 straight NAIA national tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2000.

Prediction
The Tritons don't wow you statistically but they play hard and have an intangible player who can beat you in Bryce Pope. The UCSB engine is still sputtering despite having not lost since November.  Andre Kelly can't seem to stay on the floor due to foul trouble, and Miles Norris and Ajare Sanni have been inconsistent in their performance.  The bench doesn't bring much scoring punch and the team shies away from shooting 3-pointers, probably with good reason.  Still, this is a game the Gauchos should easily win.  UCSB 74, UC San Diego 58.

UCSB vs CSF Game Preview, by gauchodan

Game 12 (BW Game 1)
UCSB at Cal State Fullerton
Thursday, December 29, 2022, 6:00 pm PST
Fullerton, Calif.

Quick Bite
The Gauchos (9-2) ride a 5-game winning streak into Big West Conference play as the prohibitive favorite.  Three of those wins came away from home: an overtime victory at Pepperdine, a 12-point decision at Portland State and a neutral-site win over Appalachian State.  For all the talk of UCSB's weak scheduling, some of this year's opponents are performing well enough to elevate out of Quad 4 territory.  Pepperdine is now a Quad 2 victory while the Fresno and PSU wins land in the Quad 3 column.  The Gauchos are 1-1 vs. Q2 (loss at Duquesne) and 2-0 vs. Q3.

As long as the Titans (6-6) maintain a NET at 240 or better (currently 206), this will slot as a Q3 game as well.  Fullerton has been streaky, which correlates with their home/away profile.  The Titans are 5-0 at home and 1-6 on the road or at neutral sites.  CSUF has three opponents in common with the Gauchos:

UCSBCSUF
Pepperdine67-64 A74-71 H
Pacific82-7194-91 A
SD Christian81-68 H87-35 H

UCSB-Cal State Fullerton History
UCSB leads the series 50-42.
The Gauchos were 0-2 vs. the Titans in 2021-22.  A 79-73 loss at Fullerton was a 3rd-straight loss for the then-reeling Gauchos in mid-January.  A mid-February 67-58 loss was the only blemish in a 9-1 run by the then-streaking Gauchos.

The Arena
Titan Gym
Capacity: 4,000
Titan Gym has served as the home court advantage for the Titans' men's and women's basketball programs since the 1964-65 season.  Historically one of the most difficult places to play because of the proximity of the bleachers to the playing floor, Titan Gym has been upgraded over the past few years to make it more fan friendly while still intimate.  Chairback seats have replaced most of the bleachers, portable basket supports have replaced fold-down backboards, new paint and championship banners now adorn the walls, and the floor was redesigned and resurfaced during the summer of 2013.  The 2012-13 season introduced a video board at the east end and scoreboards at each end that feature in-game individual player statistical updates.

Head Coach
Dedrique Taylor
overall/Cal State Fullerton: 127-154 (.452)
Former Arizona State associate head men's basketball coach and long-time college assistant Dedrique Taylor was appointed the 11th men's basketball head coach in Cal State Fullerton history, Athletic Director Jim Donovan announced on April 3, 2013. The 2022-23 season marks his 10th season at the helm of the program.  During the 2021-22 season, Taylor did what no other Cal State Fullerton head coach has accomplished during their tenure, leading the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances.  Taylor is the first coach in program history to lead the Titans to the NCAA Tournament on two separate occasions.  Furthermore, he is the first coach to have two 20+ win seasons and is the first coach to have 10+ conference wins in four different seasons.  Taylor played for Bob Williams at Division II UC Davis and then came back in 2000-01 to start his coaching career as an assistant under Williams after earning a master's degree in sports administration from the United States Sports Academy in 2000.

Prediction
The Gauchos clearly had a better non-conference season than the Titans.  Fullerton's prowess at home is somewhat muted by UCSB's ability to win away from the Thunderdome (4-2).  The Gauchos need to run the Titans off the 3-point line and yet prevent penetrating drives, a usual CSUF specialty.  UCSB 65, Cal State Fullerton 63

UCSB vs Appalachian State Game Preview, by gauchodan

Game 11
UCSB at Appalachian State
Wednesday, December 21, 2022, 3:00 pm PST
Phoenix, Ariz.

Quick Bite
The Gauchos (8-2) wrap up the non-conference season by playing in the opening game of a tripleheader at Footprint Center in Phoenix.  The Jerry Colangelo Classic also features Wyoming vs. Saint Mary's and Colorado State vs. USC.  UCSB has a nice little 4-game winning streak going, with road wins at Pepperdine and Portland State peppered in.  Ajay Mitchell had his best game of the season in the Rose City, taking over in the 2nd half to carry the Gauchos to victory over the gritty Vikings.  Santa Barbara had one of its best games at the free throw line, but three-point shooting continues to be a sore spot.

The Mountaineers (7-5) are playing their first game out of the Eastern time zone, but they've been pretty good travelers already.  They can boast of wins at Louisville and ETSU and were right in it to the end in losses at Wake Forest and Charlotte.  Their stumbles have come at home, where they have Quad 4 losses to Campbell and Kennesaw State.  Donovan Gregory is their leading scorer and was named to the Pre-Season All-Sun Belt Second Team.  The Mountaineers were picked by Sun Belt coaches to finish 7th in the 14-team conference.

UCSB-Appalachian State History
UCSB leads the series 1-0.
1940-41: W 36-29 in the Quarterfinals of the NAIA Tournament in Kansas City.  UCSB lost in the semifinals to Murray State and lost in the 3rd-place game to West Texas State.  San Diego State won the NAIA national championship that season.

The Arena
Footprint Center
Capacity: 17,071
Built in the regional population center of the southwestern United States, the arena opened on June 6, 1992, at a construction cost of $89 million.  It is currently the home arena for the NBA's Phoenix Suns, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and the Indoor Football League's Arizona Rattlers.  The ECHL's Phoenix RoadRunners also played there from 2005 until they ceased operations at the conclusion of the 2008–2009 season.  Additionally, the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes (now the Arizona Coyotes) played their first 7-plus seasons at the arena following their arrival in Phoenix on July 1, 1996.  The multi-purpose arena was formerly known as America West Arena, US Airways Center, Talking Stick Resort Arena and Phoenix Suns Arena.

Head Coach
Dustin Kerns
overall: 92-83 (.526)
Portland State: 61-46 (.570)
Kerns is in his 4th season at Appalachian State.  In his 2nd season at the helm, the Mountaineers won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and advanced to the First Four in Dayton.  He was hired at ASU after a successful 2nd season at Presbyterian, taking the Blue Hose as far as the CIT Quarterfinals.

Appalachian State is an above-average team in just about every statistical category.  What stands out to me is a combination of their field goal percentage defense and fouls committed.  They must be solid defensively to pull off that feat.  On offense, they will launch the three.  As always, we'll need to box out and not give up too many long rebounds.  UCSB continues to be a really good rebounding team.  I'm really looking forward to the Gauchos stepping out against an unknown entity in a cavernous arena that I expect will be mostly empty.  It could be a clang-fest.  UCSB 65, Appalachian State 61
