Chris Devine signs to play in Belgium



Chris Devine, former UCSB Men's basketball player, signed a professional contract to play for Voo Verviers-Pepinster in Belgium's first division league. Devine ended his career as the third-leading scorer and fifth-leading rebounder in Gaucho history.

Coach Williams all-Gaucho Team

The results are in for Coach Bob Williams' all-Gaucho team fan poll. In order: Mark Hull, Alex Harris, Chris Devine and Branduinn Fullove (tie), with Cecil Brown rounding out the first team. Adama Ndiaye and BJ Bunton (who was inadvertently omitted) made the honorable mention team.

Devine Wins Big West Best Hustle Award


Chris Devine of UCSB won this third Big West Best Hustle player award. The 6th year senior forward also earned the Best Hustle award in 2005-06 and 2007-08 seasons, in becoming the only player to win the award 3 times.

Devine is averaging 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in 28 starts on the year, ranking third and sixth in those categories, respectively. He is shooting .524 from the field, third in the conference. Devine averages 2.3 offensive boards per game, fourth among Big West players. The native of Eagle River, Alaska ranks second on the UCSB squad with 29 steals and third with 11 blocked shots. He is fourth all-time on the Gaucho career scoring list with 1,577 points.

Nunnally wins Big West Player of the Week


UCSB Men's basketball freshman guard James Nunnally won the Big West Conference Player of the Week Award for his play against UC-Riverside and Long Beach State. Nunnally led the Gauchos to victories against the Highlanders and 49ers, respectively, averaging 17.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in the two games. He shot 11-of-17 from the field, 64.7%, 6-of-9 from three-point range, 66.7%, and 7-of-8 from the free throw line, 87.5%. More importantly, he scored the winning basket with time running out, hitting a 3 point basket in defeating LBSU 76-75. He scored 15 points in the last 6:54 of the game.

Nunnally joins Chris Devine as the only UCSB players to earn the Big West Player of the Week award this season. Devine has won it two times, back-to-back weeks, on Feb. 16 and Feb. 23.

The Gauchos play in a Big West Conference Tournament quarterfinal game this Thursday, March 12 at the Anaheim Convention Center. They play in the second game of the 6:00 pm evening session. Their opponent is yet to be determined.

Chris Devine Named to All-Big West Conference Team



Chris Devine of the UCSB Men's basketball team was named to the all-Big West Conference 1st Team. Devine enters Thursday's Big West Tournament quarterfinal game as the Gauchos' leading scorer at 15.5 points per game, and leading rebounder at 6.5 per game. He is shooting 52.4% from the field and 76.9% from the free throw line. In 16 conference games, he averaged 16.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, while shooting 53.2% from the floor and 77.2% from the free throw line. He was named to the all-Big West 2nd team his freshman and sophomore years, and the senior was named Honorable Mention last season.

He is fourth on the school's all-time career scoring list with 1,577 points, and is fifth all-time in rebounds with 710. He will be able to add to those totals in the Big West Conference Tournament Thursday in a quarterfinal game in Anaheim.

Devine Wins Big West Player of the Week Again



UCSB Senior forward Chris Devine won his second consecutive Big West Conference Player of the Week award. Devine scored 26 points in a win against Big West foe University of Pacific, and 20 points in a non-conference overtime win over Montana State 78-71, in an ESPNU Bracket Buster game. In the two games, Devine averaged 23.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting 51.5% from the floor. The 6th year senior has scored 1,534 points in his career, 4th all-time on the Gaucho scoring list.

Chris Devine Named Big West Player of the Week


UCSB Gauchos Senior Forward Chris Devine was named the Big West Player of the Week. Devine scored a career-high 29 points, including the game-winning free throws in a 68-66 win over the Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Mustangs last Saturday night at the Thunderdome. Devine also grabbed 5 rebounds and dished off a season-high 4 assists in the win. The native of Eagle River, Alaska is averaging 15.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, while shooting 54.0% from the field. He ranks third in the Big West in scoring.

San Diego State defeats UCSB 68-51

The UCSB Men's basketball team lost to the SDSU Aztecs 68-51 at Cox Arena in San Diego. Chris Devine led the Gauchos with 18 points, while Jesse Byrd had 6 rebounds. Freshman center Greg Somogyi had a team-high 5 blocks despite playing only 15 minutes. Lorenzo Wade, Ryan Amoroso, and Kyle Spain led the Aztecs with 17, 13, and 11 points, respectively. SDSU also won the battle of the boards, 31 to 25.

UCSB loses to Weber State on the road 70-63

The UCSB Men's basketball team couldn't complete their comeback attempt and lost to Weber State 70-63 in a road game in Ogden, Utah. Chris Devine led the Gauchos with 17 points, while Jesse Byrd corralled a game-high 14 rebounds. Steve Panos led the Wildcats with 21 points.

UCSB Breezes past LMU 81-61

The UCSB Men's basketball team won going away over LMU 81-61 in a home game at the Thunderdome. Senior forward Chris Devine, back after missing one game due to a sprained ankle, paced the Gauchos with 15 points while junior guard James Powell added 14 points. Junior forward Jesse Byrd again led the Gauchos on the boards with 9 rebounds. DJ Posley and Paul Roemer led the pass-happy Gauchos with 5 assists each. The Gauchos, now 5-4, have now won four of their last five games.

UCSB Rebounds with Road Win against Utah Valley

The UCSB Men's basketball team closed out a 5-game road trip with a solid win over Utah Valley 62-57. With injured forward Chris Devine out of the lineup, Jesse Byrd picked up the slack with a double-double 13 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman guard Will Brew, Jr. had a break out game by adding 11 points in his first-ever start.

UCSB loses to Illinois State 87-59

The UCSB Men's basketball team fell to the Illinois State 87-59 in the championship game of the World Vision Invitational, hosted by ISU in Normal, IL. Both teams entered the game sporting 2-0 records in the round-robin tournament. Champ Oguchi and tournament MVP Osiris Eldridge led a balanced Redbird attack with 18 points each. ISU torched UCSB's defense, shooting 62.5% from the field, 50% from 3-points. Jesse Byrd led the Gauchos with 17 points and 8 rebounds, followed by Chris Devine with 9 points, all in the first half, before injuring his ankle. Devine was held out the entire second half.

UCSB grinds out a win against Nicholls State

The UCSB Men's basketball team defeated Nicholls State 57-38 in a defensive struggle in the second round of the World Vision Invitational, hosted by Illinois State in Normal, IL. The Gauchos held Nicholls State to 30.8% shooting from the floor, 25% from 3-point land. James Powell led the Gauchos with 12 points, while Chris Devine pulled down 9 rebounds. DJ Posley, playing in front of family and friends from nearby Hazelcrest, IL, chipped in 9 points.

The UCSB Men's Basketball team defeated Winston-Salem 71-58 in the World Vision Invitational, hosted by Illinois State University in Normal, IL. Chris Devine had a double-double and led the Gauchos with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Paul Roemer chipped in 11 points.

Gauchos blow a late lead in loss to the Dons 73-72

The University of San Francisco Dons overcame a late 11-point lead to win 73-72 over the UCSB Gauchos in a non-conference squeaker in San Francisco. Chris Devine led the Gauchos with 24 points and 8 rebounds, while James Powell added 22 points, 17 in the first half. But 6 late turnovers by the Gauchos enabled USF to go on a 15-0 run, taking a lead they never relinquished. Dior Lowhorn led USF with 17 points, and made a couple key 3-point shots late in the game to ice it for the 4-1 Dons. UCSB is now 1-3.

UCSB defeats CSULA in home opener

The UCSB Men's basketball team defeated CSULA in the regular season opener for both teams before 1562 fans in the Thunderdome. Senior 6'8" forward Chris Devine led the Gauchos with 17 points and 11 rebounds, willing his teammates to a victory with a late scoring surge in the second half. Junior 6'2" junior guard James Powell contributed 16 points and 7 rebounds, while true freshman 6'7" forward Jaime Serna also had 7 rebounds despite playing only 21 minutes.

UCSB Men's Basketball picked 2nd in Big West preseason polls


The Gauchos men's basketball team was picked 2nd in the Big West preseason polls by both the coaches and the media. Senior Forward Chris Devine was picked on the preseason all-Big West Conference team for the 2008-2009 season. Here's the press release:
