Gaucho preview: Lucas Devenny

Lucas Devenny is a 6'9" freshman power forward from Santa Rosa, CA. He averaged 21 points, 16 rebounds, and four blocked shots a game his senior year at Piner High. Named to the Honorable Mention All-State and Second All-Bay Area teams, Devenny led Piner to three consecutive post-season berths, and a North Bay League title last season.

Devenny had career high games of 36 points, 26 rebounds, and 11 blocked shots in high school. Known for being a solid presence in the paint, Devenny can also step out and knock down the outside jumper with accuracy. His length and strength in the post will be valuable for the Gaucho front court, as will his ability to rebound and score from the perimeter and inside.

Gaucho preview: Jaime Serna

With practice starting next week, and the season a month away, it's about time to re-visit Gaucho returnees, and get acquainted with the newcomers. Up first is Jaime Serna, the 6'7" sophomore power forward / center for the Gauchos.

Serna averaged 6.1 points and 3.6 rebounds per game as a true freshman last season, shooting .538 from the field, and .662 from the free throw line. Serna will be called on to play tough interior defense, and grab rebounds on both ends of the floor, especially with frontcourt mate Jesse Byrd out for the season due to a lingering knee injury. Serna will also be counted on to score more inside, expanding his repertoire of offensive moves in the post. His physical presence inside will be important for the Gauchos, as the Gauchos appear loaded on the perimeter.

Serna will probably start at one of the forward positions, which he did for the last 16 games last season. He is one of four returnees who were part of a vaunted freshman class from 2008, and if form holds true that the biggest improvement occurs between the first and second seasons, look for the Gauchos to have a much better team this season.

UCSB Breezes past LMU 81-61

The UCSB Men's basketball team won going away over LMU 81-61 in a home game at the Thunderdome. Senior forward Chris Devine, back after missing one game due to a sprained ankle, paced the Gauchos with 15 points while junior guard James Powell added 14 points. Junior forward Jesse Byrd again led the Gauchos on the boards with 9 rebounds. DJ Posley and Paul Roemer led the pass-happy Gauchos with 5 assists each. The Gauchos, now 5-4, have now won four of their last five games.

Tarheels take down the Gauchos 84-67

The University of North Carolina Tarheels proved they were worthy of their number 1 ranking by pulling away from the UCSB Gauchos in the second half and winning by a score of 84-67. James Nunnally led the Gauchos with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Ty Lawson led 6 Tarheels in double figure scoring with 19 points, leading the potent UNC fast break on numerous occasions. Last year's college player of the year Tyler Hansbrough finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds.

The Gauchos had the Thunderdome rocking when they briefly held a 27-22 lead, as Somogyi dunked over Hansbrough and Paul Roemer hit two straight 3-point jumpers. The Tarheels closed with a flurry to end the half, leading 45-37 and never looked back in the second half.
