2010 preview for Justin Joyner

This was last year's preview of Justin Joyner: http://gauchohoops.blogspot.com/2009/10/gaucho-preview-justin-joyner.html
After redshirting due to a broken wrist the season before, 6'0" senior point guard Justin Joyner was eager to return to the hard court last season. However, he was slowed down by another injury his junior season, this time a lingering ankle sprain. While he never really got untracked due to the ankle, Joyner was still able to maintain a high assist-to-turnover ratio, one of the true measuring sticks for a point guard. In fact, Joyner again led the Gauchos with a ratio of 46 assists and 22 turnovers.
If Joyner can return to the pre-injury standards he set his freshman and sophomore seasons, look for his teammates to have even higher production. When Joyner is at 100% health, he makes his teammates better, and the Gauchos will be that much tougher to unseat as Big West champions.

Justin Joyner out with an ankle injury

Justin Joyner, UCSB's projected starter at point guard, will have to wait a couple games before his much-anticipated return to the hardwood court. Joyner, a 6'0" redshirt junior, had to sit out last season due to a broken wrist, and his return this season was expected to relieve much of the anxieties the Gauchos had with ball-handling duties.
His assist/turnover ratio his first two seasons was one of the best among Big West Conference point guards. Without him, the Gauchos suffered more turnovers and missed his floor leadership last season.
The good news is that the ankle sprain appears to be minor, as he will only miss the Sonoma State exhibition game, and perhaps their next game against Cal. State-Los Angeles. Here's to a quick recovery for JJ!

Gaucho preview: Justin Joyner

Justin Joyner returns as the Gauchos starting point guard after sitting out last year due to a broken wrist. The six-foot redshirt junior will again run the Gaucho offense, as he did his freshman and sophomore seasons. Joyner started all 32 games his sophomore season, averaging 3.8 points and 2.5 rebounds despite playing through that injured wrist. More importantly, he dished out 116 assists and committed only 56 turnovers, giving him an assist/turnover ratio of 2.1/1.0, among the best in the Big West Conference.
A ball hawk on defense, Joyner also had 35 steals during that 2007/2008 season. He will provide proven, experienced leadership on both sides of the ball, with increased basketball knowledge from watching the action from the sidelines all last season. Another benefit from being sidelined with an injured right wrist is that Joyner has been able to increase his dexterity with his left-hand, making him even more dangerous with penetrations and finishes.
The play-maker will be able to provide leadership while on the court, and not just from the sidelines. The only people looking forward to the upcoming season more than Joyner may be his teammates, as they know he will provide them with plenty of scoring opportunities.

Justin Joyner

With the UCSB Men's basketball season just around the corner, it's time to get re-acquainted with returnees as well as introduce ourselves to incoming players. Here is an article from the UCSB official athletics site on two-year starting point guard Justin Joyner.

Justin redshirted last year to recover from a broken wrist and he looks ready to lead the Gauchos back to a Big West title. Good luck Justin!
