Long Beach State dominated the Big West last season, but an upset loss at the hands of UCSB in the Big West Conference Tournament left the 49ers out of the big dance and stuck in the little dance. However, the big four are back and all seniors and they will not let that happen again.Ummm, this should be good locker room material in the Thunderdome, and in Anaheim.
Cal Poly may give Long Beach State a run for their money, but this team is too talented to lose the Big West. With Ware, Anderson, Robinson and Phelps leading the way, it is impossible to find a more talented group of starters in the Big West.

MBB: Tristan Wilson Beats the Halftime Buzzer from Halfcourt for LBSU
This game involved two Big West Conference opponents who the Gauchos have lost to already: Long Beach State and University of Pacific. LBSU's Tristan Wilson launched a halfcourt shot to beat the first-half buzzer. The shot proved pivotal as the 49ers won 70 - 69.

Gauchos defeat 49ers to earn NCAA berth
The UCSB Men's basketball team defeated the Long Beach State 49ers to win the Big West Conference Tournament in Anaheim, and earned a berth into the NCAA playoffs. The Gauchos (20 - 9) were led by tournament Most Valuable Player Orlando Johnson's 20 points, followed by James Nunnally with 19, and Jaime Serna's eleven. Jaime Serna and Nunnally shared the team high in rebounds with six, while Johnson led the Gauchos with four assists.
The third-seeded 49ers (17 - 16) overcame a 35 - 30 first-half deficit to take a 53 - 52 lead in the second half, on the strength of balanced scoring from Casper Ware, TJ Robinson, Greg Plater, and Larry Anderson who scored 19, 15, 14, and 11 points, respectively. Robinson led the 49ers with eight rebounds and Plater dished out five assists. However, the 49ers could not hold the lead, as Nunnally hit a key 3-pointer to up the Gaucho lead to 53 - 49 with 1:43 left. Johnson, Powell and Nunnally all hit key free throws to clinch the game and the Big West Tournament championship.
The Gauchos earn the automatic bid into the NCAA playoffs as the Big West Conference representative.

Gauchos squeak by the 49ers 64 - 62
The UCSB Men's basketball team retained first place in the Big West Conference regular season race by edging Long Beach State 64 - 62 in the Thunderdome. The Gauchos (14 - 8, 9 - 3) were led by Jaime Serna's season-high 17 points and Will Brew's 12 points, all in the first half. Orlando Johnson chipped in 11 points, but more importantly, he assisted on eight Gaucho baskets. James Nunnally led the Gauchos with seven rebounds, followed by Greg Somogyi with six boards. Somogyi led a stingy Gaucho defense with five blocked shots, and altered many more in the paint.
The 49ers (12 - 13, 6 - 6) were led by Stephan Gilling's 17 points, including five 3-point baskets. TJ Robinson and Casper Ware had 12 points each, with Robinson pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds, and Ware dishing out six assists.
The tightly-contested game had five ties and seven lead changes, and came down to the final possession. Ware committed a turnover driving the lane, and Nunnally recovered the ball as time expired.
Former Gaucho great Brian Shaw was honored as a "Legend of the Dome" in absentia before the game.

Brian Shaw to be honored as "Legend of the Dome"
Brian Shaw, former basktball Gaucho great from 1986 - 1988, will be honored as a "Legend of the Dome" in the Thunderdome at halftime of a Big West Conference match up between UCSB and the Long Beach State 49ers. Game time is 4 pm, Saturday, February 13.

UCSB Beats LBSU 76-75 to clinch 4th Seed
March Madness is here: Gauchos Beat 49ers on Nunnally's Buzzer Beater
The UCSB Men's basketball team beat the Long Beach State 49ers 76-75 on a last-second shot by James Nunnally at the Thunderdome to clinch the 4th seed in next week's Big West Conference Tournament in Anaheim. They also receive a 1st round bye in the tournament.
Nunnally, a freshman guard, hit a 3 point basket in a wild finish, when the lead changed hands twice in 10 seconds. Nunnally scored a lay up to tie the game at 73 apiece, but Will Brew, Jr. intentionally fouled the 49ers' TJ Robinson, thinking the Gauchos were down 1. Robinson calmly sank both free throws with 6.8 seconds left. Nunnally then canned the game-winning shot with time running out, igniting a mad rush by fans onto the court. The victory sent off a dramatic farewell to three Gauchos on Senior night: Chris Devine, DJ Posley, and Nick Quick, whose Gaucho career ended earlier due to a knee injury.
Nunnally led the Gauchos with 20 points, including an amazing 15 in the final 6:54. Devine added 15 points and 5 rebounds in his final home game. Posley dished out 7 assists in his final game at the Thunderdome. Stephen Gilling led the 49ers with 23 points, including 6 from behind the 3 pt. arc, and Donovan Morris chipped in 17.
The Gauchos hope to continue their winning ways, playing in the second game of the Thursday, March 12 quarterfinal evening session of the Big West Conference Tournament at the Anaheim Convention Center. Their opponent is yet to be determined, based on Wednesday's preliminary round.

Gauchos lose 76-64 to LBSU in Big West opener
The UCSB Men's basketball team lost their Big West conference opener to the Long Beach State 49ers 76-64, in a game at the Pyramid in Long Beach. Chris Devine led the Gauchos with 20 points and 8 rebounds, followed by James Powell who chipped in 10 points, along with 5 assists. The Gauchos led 26-19 with 9 minutes remaining in the first half by hitting 6-7 3 point shots, but ended up squandering the lead, and trailed 36-29 at halftime. They were never able to regain the lead, as Long Beach pulled away in the second half by hitting their 3 point shots. Casper Ware led the 49ers with 21 points, including shooting 3-3 from 3-point range.
