Quick Bite
The Gauchos (5-2) are coming off of a solid 82-71 victory over Pacific at the Thunderdome. Ajare Sanni broke out with 22 points, Ajay Mitchell added 19 and Miles Norris tallied 18 points. UCSB has been a different story in true road games, however, going 0-2. The Gauchos are 5-0 in the Pacific Time Zone. Something has to give this evening.
The Waves (5-3) went on an apparent COVID cause over Thanksgiving, moving a trip to Grand Canyon to mid-December and canceling a game with Cal Poly. They returned last Saturday with a convincing 88-69 victory over Northern Arizona (bad score compare) before losing their first home game of the season to highly-regarded Nevada. The Waves have also beaten UC Irvine but lost in overtime at Cal State Fullerton and were absolutely hammered at UCLA 100-53.
UCSB-Pepperdine History
According to UCSB, the series is tied 35-35 but 72 games (?) have been played. According to Pepperdine, the Waves lead the series 38-37. Joe Pasternack is 3-0 vs. Pepperdine since his arrival in Santa Barbara, with two of those wins coming in Malibu.
The Arena
Firestone Fieldhouse
Capacity: 3,104
Opened: 1973
Facility construction was initiated in conjunction with the University's move to Malibu in 1972, and the first home event was on November 30, 1973, when the Pepperdine men's basketball team lost a 52-50 decision to Pacific. Firestone Fieldhouse was officially dedicated on September 20, 1975, by President Gerald R. Ford. The modern, cozy facility is an excellent place to view basketball games and volleyball matches from both courtside bleachers and upstairs theatre seats. The basketball court is named Robert “Duck” Dowell court, named after the winningest coach in Pepperdine men's basketball coach, and was dedicated on February 14, 2004.

Romar is in the 5th season of his second stint at the 'Dine. Pepperdine has just one winning season since Romar's return, a 15-12 season in 2020-21 that culminated in the CBI championship. Romar spent 15 seasons at Washington, taking the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament six times between 2004 and 2011. However, U-Dub famously was left out of the 2012 NCAA Tournament despite winning the Pac-12 regular-season title and Romar has not had a 20-win season since. IMHO, Romar is a great recruiter and a poor head coach.

UCSB played much better defense vs. Pacific, and they will need even better defense to slow down the Waves. UCSB will need to keep the pace down in order to escape Firestone with a win. UCSB vs. Pepperdine Men's Basketball Game Preview, by Gaucho Freg

Pepperdine Waves
The Waves are 2-3 in D1 games, 4-3 overall. Two of those losses were very close; to UCLA in triple OT and @ SDSU where they had a 14 point 2nd half lead disappear. Their third loss was a surprising home loss to CSUN last Saturday, 84-89. Their wins have come against UCI by 14 in their opener and over the Cal Bears by 12.
They are averaging 84 ppg while giving up 73, shooting 32% from deep.
They have two terrific players that will contend for first team all WCC in guard Colbey Ross and Forward Kessler Edwards.
Starting 5
G Colbey Ross , #4, 6’1, 185 lb, Sr 20.1 ppg, nearly 8 apg(!) and 4 rpg. 33% deep. Plays all game, 39 mpg. Leads team in getting to the line (84%) and 3pt attempts. The best PG, probably best player overall, SB will face this year.
G Sedrick Altman, #2, 6’2”, 180 lb Soph 6.6 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 3 apg, 28 mpg. Well rounded contributor but does not shoot the 3 ball well.
G Jade Smith, #5, 6’4”, 185 lb RS Jr 10.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.6 apg 27 mpg. 15-16 from the line.
F Kessler Edwards,#15, 6'8", 215lb, 20.4 ppg, 6.9 rpg, an incredible 47% from deep and has 10 blocks on the year. Very quick.
F Kene Chukwuka, #14, 6'9", 225 lb, GT (Pitt), 8.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 26 mpg
Key Reserves
F Jan Zidek, #31 6’9”, 240 lb. Soph 13.2 ppg, 3 rpg, 27 mpg. Tremendous three point shooter (39%). Son of George Zidek, the center for UCLA's 1995 championship team.
W Andre Ball, #10, 6’7”, 190 lb, RS Soph 4.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 19 mpg. Cousin of the more famous Ball brothers.
G Daryl Polk, #10, 5'9”, 155 lb, Jr. 16 mpg.
Sophomore guard Robbie Heath out of Australia, a D2 transfer, just gained eligibility and may play.
I watched some of their games vs. SDSU and Cal and they looked like a top 40 team in those games. Their loss to CSUN is a head scratcher, even if CSUN is much better than
they were projected to be. The Waves won't catch Gonzaga but they could finish as high as 2nd in the competitive WCC. Most preseason polls had them 4th. UCSB has a four game win streak in the series but trail overall by just one game.
Can our guards defend Ross? We're better equipped than most to take him on. I do think Edwards is much quicker than Sow and will win that match up in the paint. I think its a competitive game but Pepperdine just a bit more talented and takes this by about a half dozen.

Coming off a 9 win season last year, the Waves lost a lot and are expected to contend with Portland for the cellar of the WCC this year. Former UCSB assistant under Bob Williams, now Wave HC Marty Wilson is certainly on the hot seat and should another sub 10 win season be the result, he may be following the path of his former boss. They have started three true freshman in two of their three games. The first three games don’t bode so well as the Waves lost both of their D1 games, by 31 on the road to Oklahoma State who was picked last in the Big 12, and by 2 at home to Northern Colorado of the Big Sky who were pasted by Davis in Colorado. They did handily beat Div III Cal Lutheran. They don’t shoot the ball well from beyond the arc, 14-49 for a .286 percentage. They do make their free throws, .709. Senior PG Amadi Udenyi has not played since their opener and was in concussion protocol last week. Not sure about his status. Another player they were looking to rely on, Eric Cooper (yet another transfer out of Nevada) has also been injured and has yet to play. His status for tonight’s game is also unknown.
The Waves have a balanced attack with 8 players averaging between 6.7 and 13 ppg. Could be indicative of a team also still searching for go-to players.
True freshman wing Trae Berhow (6’5”, 195lb) leads with 13 ppg including 5-14 from three while grabbing 6.3 boards pg. He also leads the team in minutes played, 32 pg.
Grad Transfer (UW) Mathew Attewe (6’9”, 255lb) is a F/C and is second on the team in both scoring and rebounding with 10.3 ppg and 6.7 rpg in only 18m of play per game.
RS Sophomore Forward Kameron Edwards sat out last season after an All WCC freshman season. He leads the team with 7 boards per game while adding 10ppg. He has shot 1-5 from three.
Freshman, Colbey Ross, plays pg, leads the team with 15 assists and is adept at getting to the rim & drawing fouls. He is a perfect 15-15 from the stripe. That does not extend to 3 pt shooting where he is only 1-7. Seems he is filling in for Udenyi until he is healthy.
The third freshman, wing Jade Smith (6’4”, 175lb) is adding 8.3ppg and 4 rpg and is only 1-8 from three.
Key reserves:
F Nolan Taylor (6’7”, 260lb) is a sophomore, shoots a high percentage from both the field and the line and is contributing 9.3 ppg and 5.3 rpg.
JC Transfer Forward Darnell Dunn (6’6”, 205lb) can also get to the line where he is 8-11 and is scoring 8.7 ppg.
Sophomore Guard Knox Hellums (6’5”, 195lb) is a three point threat, making 6-13 and scoring 6.7ppg.
Prediction:
The Waves remind me a bit of last year’s Gaucho team which also had misfortune due to unavailable players and had to rely on contributions from true freshmen early. The questionable status of Cooper and Udenyi for the Waves and Jackson for the Gauchos does provide some uncertainty, but I think UCSB wins this regardless. With the assumption that none of the questionable players play, UCSB wins by about a dozen, 79-67.
