Game 10
UCSB at Portland State
Saturday, December 17, 2022, 7:00 pm PST
Portland, Ore.
Quick Bite
The Gauchos (7-2) are on a 3-game winning streak and have generally looked better with D1 wins over Pacific and at Pepperdine. UCSB's bench got a lot of experience in a win over San Diego Christian. It still feels, however, that we haven't seen the best of this team yet. Unless Cole Anderson is on the court, there is no one that scares opponents with their outside shooting. Teams can concentrate on packing it in against Andre Kelly and company. Improved three-point shooting will help turn this team into a real threat.
The Vikings (5-6) are playing their only home game over a 40-day span. PSU's next home game won't come until Jan. 12 against Northern Arizona. Portland State comes off a strong road performance, albeit a loss, dropping a game at Santa Clara 78-75. The Vikings led by a point inside of one minute to play, but the Broncos scored on each of their final three possessions to come away with a victory. Despite the loss, the Vikings bounced back from their poorest offensive outing of the year in a 72-49 loss at Cal Poly on Dec. 10. Portland State has beaten Oregon State twice this season.

Prediction
Statistically, Portland State looks similar to Pepperdine. KPom ranks Portland State 15th in the nation in adjusted tempo. The Gauchos were able to slow the Waves down last weekend, and they will need to be at their best defensively again. PSU can maintain its pace due to its liberal substitution patterns, something UCSB has not been able to develop except in non-D1 games. The Gauchos should have a big advantage on the boards, and it looks like they'll be going to the free throw line a lot. UCSB has been bad at the FT line this season, but it feels like the guys missing FT's are not normally bad FT shooters. Should be another close one. UCSB 75, Portland State 74.

UCSB vs Pepperdine Game Preview, by gauchodan
Game 8
UCSB at Pepperdine
Saturday, December 10, 2022, 5:00 pm PST
Malibu, Calif.
Quick Bite
The Gauchos (5-2) are coming off of a solid 82-71 victory over Pacific at the Thunderdome. Ajare Sanni broke out with 22 points, Ajay Mitchell added 19 and Miles Norris tallied 18 points. UCSB has been a different story in true road games, however, going 0-2. The Gauchos are 5-0 in the Pacific Time Zone. Something has to give this evening.
The Waves (5-3) went on an apparent COVID cause over Thanksgiving, moving a trip to Grand Canyon to mid-December and canceling a game with Cal Poly. They returned last Saturday with a convincing 88-69 victory over Northern Arizona (bad score compare) before losing their first home game of the season to highly-regarded Nevada. The Waves have also beaten UC Irvine but lost in overtime at Cal State Fullerton and were absolutely hammered at UCLA 100-53.
UCSB-Pepperdine History
According to UCSB, the series is tied 35-35 but 72 games (?) have been played. According to Pepperdine, the Waves lead the series 38-37. Joe Pasternack is 3-0 vs. Pepperdine since his arrival in Santa Barbara, with two of those wins coming in Malibu.
The Arena
Firestone Fieldhouse
Capacity: 3,104
Opened: 1973
Facility construction was initiated in conjunction with the University's move to Malibu in 1972, and the first home event was on November 30, 1973, when the Pepperdine men's basketball team lost a 52-50 decision to Pacific. Firestone Fieldhouse was officially dedicated on September 20, 1975, by President Gerald R. Ford. The modern, cozy facility is an excellent place to view basketball games and volleyball matches from both courtside bleachers and upstairs theatre seats. The basketball court is named Robert “Duck” Dowell court, named after the winningest coach in Pepperdine men's basketball coach, and was dedicated on February 14, 2004.
Head Coach
Lorenzo Romar
overall: 450-358 (.557)
Pepperdine: 101-118 (.461)
Romar is in the 5th season of his second stint at the 'Dine. Pepperdine has just one winning season since Romar's return, a 15-12 season in 2020-21 that culminated in the CBI championship. Romar spent 15 seasons at Washington, taking the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament six times between 2004 and 2011. However, U-Dub famously was left out of the 2012 NCAA Tournament despite winning the Pac-12 regular-season title and Romar has not had a 20-win season since. IMHO, Romar is a great recruiter and a poor head coach.

Matchup
Pepperdine is 3rd-ranked nationally in 3-point FG% (43.3%), 9th in 3-pointers made per game (10.9), 7th in defensive rebounds per game (30.12), 31st in blocks per game (5.0), 46th in field goal percentage (48.6%) and 40th in scoring offense (80.5 ppg). The Waves are 326th in offensive rebounds per game (7.75), 317th in turnover margin (-2.6) and 323rd in turnovers forced per game (10.88). Mike Mitchell Jr. is 3rd nationally in 3-point percentage (55.1%), 14th in 3-pointers per game (3.38) and 42nd in total 3-pointers made (27). Houston Mallette is 30th in assist/turnover ratio (3.25), 41st in 3-point percentage (44.2%) and 59th in 3-pointers per game (2.88). Boubacar Coulibaly is 58th in the nation in blocks per game (1.71) and Maxwell Lewis is 27th in field goal percentage (62.4%).
UCSB is 31st in the nation in rebound margin (+7.7 per game), 51st in field goal percentage (48.4%) and 52nd in assists per game (16.0). UCSB is 322nd in the nation in three point attempts per game (17.6). Ajay Mitchell is 63rd in the nation in assists per game (4.9) and Andres Kelly is 81st in double doubles (2), 34th in defensive rebounds per game (6.71) and 41st in rebounds per game (9.0).
Prediction
This could be Romar's best team at Pepperdine. Currently, the Waves are the highest-ranked non-conference opponent per the NET. Pepperdine shoots the ball well from all over the court. UCSB played much better defense vs. Pacific, and they will need even better defense to slow down the Waves. UCSB will need to keep the pace down in order to escape Firestone with a win. UOP vs UCSB Game Preview, by gauchodan
Pacific at UCSB
Saturday, December 3, 2022, 2:00 pm PST
Santa Barbara, Calif.
Quick Bite
The Gauchos (4-2) come home to the friendly confines after another disappointing road loss, this time after essentially being outclassed in a loss to Duquesne of the Atlantic 10. UCSB has been underwhelming in the non-conference season, impressing only in a neutral-site victory over Fresno State. Looking at the rest of the Big West, the Gauchos need to undergo rapid improvement in December to catch up to the perceived level of, say, UC Irvine.
The Tigers (3-5) have had a very odd start to the season. Pacific is 0-4 at home and 3-1 on the road. Just two days ago, UOP held off UC Davis 74-72 with Oklahoma State transfer Keylan Boone coming off the bench to score 17 points and grab 7 rebounds. But they've lost at home to Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly, so go figure.
UCSB-Pacific History
Pacific leads series 56-55. UCSB lost at Pacific 80-71 in 2021-22, the only game between the two schools since Joe Pasternack became the head coach.
The Arena
Campus Events Center (The Thunderdome)
Capacity 5,000
Year Built 1979
The first 500 students to attend the game will receive a bucket hat that you can only get at the game.
Head Coach
Leonard Perry
overall: 59-124 (.322)
Pacific: 11-27 (.289)
Perry was the head coach at his alma mater, the University of Idaho, from 2001 to 2006. He served as an assistant coach with Colorado State, the Indiana Pacers, Southern Miss, Iowa State and Utah State. He was also an advance scout and pro personnel scout for the Pacers. Prior to coaching, Perry played for Idaho for two seasons. As a junior, the Vandals won a second straight Big Sky Championship under Kermit Davis and appeared in the NCAA tournament in 1990. Under new head coach Larry Eustachy, he was named the Vandals' Most Outstanding Player as a senior in 1991. Perry was recruited to Moscow in 1989 by Davis after playing two years at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas.

UCSB is 18th in the nation in rebound margin (+9.2 per game), 58th in defensive rebounds per game (28.0) and 51st in free throw attempts per game (21.2). UCSB is 306th in the nation in three point attempts per game (18.0) and 317th in bench points (14.5 per game). Cole Anderson is 16th nationally in 3-point percentage (51.7%), Ajay Mitchell is 43rd in the nation in assists per game (5.3), 77th in steals per game (2.0) and 80th in free throws made (32) and Andres Kelly is 42nd in defensive rebounds per game (6.67) and 58th in rebounds per game (8.7).
Prediction
We shouldn't have a problem controlling the boards and getting good looks against Pacific. We'll see if they have anyone who can break down the perimeter, which is one of the Gauchos' Achilles heels. I think we turn this around today. UCSB 77, Pacific 65
