Orlando Johnson (#3 in white) scores from the perimeter and in the post, including a couple "And-1's". Nate Garth (#7 in light blue) has 6 or 7 assists within a 10-minute span (he could have had more had his teammates made more shots), and also knocks down a couple 3-point shots. Nate also drives by his defender a few times. Both end up guarding each other on a few possessions. The future looks bright for the Gaucho program.

Former Gauchos Alex Harris and Ivan Elliott are teamed up with current Gaucho James Nunnally in a San Francisco Pro-Am summer league game. The SF City team has yellow jerseys, and Nunnally is wearing #7. For you newbies, Harris is wearing #25 with the silky smooth jumper, and Elliott is wearing #35.

Gauchos add Keegan Hornbuckle to roster

The UC Santa Barbara men's basketball team has landed its second key transfer in the last six weeks. Forward Keegan Hornbuckle, who played as a freshman at the University of Colorado during the 2009-10 season, has transferred into the Gauchos' program and will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2011-12 season.

Hornbuckle is an athletic and versatile player who can play both inside and out. At 6-foot-7, 205 pounds, he can shoot the 3-pointer and drive to the basket. He reminds UCSB head coach Bob Williams of several of his former players.

"He's a perfect fit," Williams said. "He can help us carry on in the tradition of what Branduinn Fullove and Mark Hull started, what Al Harris and Chris Devine continued, and what James Nunnally and Orlando Johnson are doing right now.

"Keegan is the same type of player," he continued. "He is a versatile, large wing, the type of player that has always been so important to our program. He shoots it, bounces it, defends, and rebounds. He's a very skilled all-around player."

The buzz: Johnson was the Big West player of the year last season, his first with the Gauchos after transferring from Loyola Marymount. Johnson has 3-point range -- he hit 39.7 percent of his shots from beyond the arc -- but he gets most of his points with his mid-range game and in the lane. He uses his size well against smaller defenders and also is an effective defender and rebounder.

According to Jeff Goodman of Fox Sports, former Colorado University freshman Keegan Hornbuckle has decided to transfer to UCSB. It has not been publicly confirmed by Gaucho head coach Bob Williams yet, but if true, the freshman forward will have three years of eligibility left after redshirting next season.

In fact, the reference to Hornbuckle has two errors: his first name is Keegan (not Keenan), and he is listed as 6'7" by the Colorado Buffaloes athletics website (not 6'0").

Confirmation from the coaching staff of Hornbuckle's transfer is pending.

Sophomore basketball player Orlando Johnson and senior volleyball player Rebecca Saraceno were named Male and Female Athletes of the Year respectively, while men's basketball coach Bob Williams and women's volleyball coach Kathy Gregory were named Coaches of the Year at the 2010 SB Awards on Wednesday night at the Isla Vista Theater in Isla Vista, Calif.

Why Nate Garth left the Lobos

...and why he is transferring to the Gauchos. The former Lobo is a class act, parting on good terms with UNM coach Steve Alford and the Lobo basketball program. His desire to be closer to home and to have an increased role with a solid program prompted his decision to transfer to UCSB.

NCAA transfer regulations stipulate that he is not eligible to play next year, but he can still practice with the team as a redshirt. While he won't be able to play in games until the 2011 - 2012 season, his impact will be immediate as he increases the level of play in practice sessions. The whole team will benefit as they all improve their skill sets. A team that practices hard, plays hard in games.

Nate will be a great addition to the Gaucho basketball program. I have a feeling Mr. Garth will be a fan favorite among the Gaucholocos.

Nate Garth, a point guard who played the last two seasons at the University of New Mexico, will transfer to UC Santa Barbara, head coach Bob Williams announced Tuesday.

By NCAA rules, Garth will sit out the 2010-11 season as a redshirt and will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2011-12.

"Nate is a highly skilled, extremely quick, and very athletic point guard," Williams said. "He is a leader and should be a great addition to our program."
